During the testing times of Covid-19, Bharatbhai Shah, the President of
Surat Manav Seva Sangh 'Chhanyado' devised an interesting, out-of-the-box 'Roti
Bank' concept as he was aware that serving meals to the needy during lockdown
was a massive challenge, but preparing a voluminous amount of Chapattis was
even a bigger one! So he appealed to people of Surat to participate in this 'Service
from Home' activity of making Chapattis and donating them so that it can reach to
the underfed. This was a very idiosyncratic campaign that India witnessed for the
first time.
He urged every household in Surat through the medium of Social Media to
prepare 5 to10 extra Rotis (chapattis) to donate to the needy apart from what they
regularly make for themselves. Within a few hours, 500 families had volunteered
to assist the poor, which quickly grew to 10,000 families, and later on, 26000
families joined this noble cause. Volunteers collected rotis from their residence.
26000 families participated in this 'Roti Bank' (Services from Home) project,
delivering over 1.5 lakh rotis per day. All in all, 1300 Roti Bank Collection Centers
were established during this unique campaign. Each team had two people in
charge of near about 20 collection points. A total of 130 volunteers helped with the
logistics part to carry out this entire process smoothly.
This enabled a sense of satisfaction to the women at home during the
lockdown while they became a part of service to mankind by preparing chapattis
for the needy. Thank you is just a small word when it is about acknowledging the
colossal contribution of all the volunteers who supported 'Chhanyado' in this
project particularly the Social Media team, Chapatti Donors, Caterers,
Administrators of all 9 centres, robust Distribution Channel, Space Providers for
preparation of these meals, Monetary contributors as well as other Social
Organizations. We bow down and express our deep gratitude to all of them for
coming forward and making this seemingly impossible mission a huge success
with utmost enthusiasm.
During the lockdown, world over there was a shortage of food and
medical supplies. The lower middle-class and the poor, both were hard hit because
they seldom store food and grocery for more than a few days. Looking at this dire
situation the trustees at 'Chhanyado' under the leadership of Bharatbhai Shah
immediately came into action to chalk out an action plan for relief to these people in
terms of providing them with food and medicines whilst preserving their dignity.
Ramjibhai Chandak suggested to spend 100% of the corpus fund to provide meals
to migrants, needy and the Middle Class.
Following this, 'Chhanyado' established 9 centres with 650 volunteers
to provide kitchen and logistical support in the most affected areas comprising of
the poor and migrant labours. From 27th March to 31st May, 2020, a total of around
5.5 million comprehensive meals were distributed to these set of people. This was
made possible on receiving free vegetables from the solicitous farmers of Timba,
Shampura and others from Olpad and Kamrej Taluka.
Surat has a vast industrial area and lockdown forced the migrant
workers to return to their native place. Team 'Chhanyado' ensured that 27,000 such
stranded migrant workers received breakfast packets and water at Udhana Railway
Station through 'Chhanyado'. Over and above this, more than 57,000 food packets
including mineral water bottle were distributed to Covid-19 patients in New Civil
Hospital. Doctors, nurses and paramedical team who were working day and night to
ensure the wellbeing of patients were provided with healthy breakfast and water bottle on daily basis as a token of gratitude.
Looking at the dire health emergency situations during Covid-19
Phase-2, the trustees at 'Chhanyado' decided to donate 50 Ventipeeps and
BiPaps that help to make breathing easier for admitted patients of the New
Civil Hospital at Surat and 5 units were issued to Jivan Jyot Hospital at
Amroli. 'Chhanyado' also donated 3 ventilators to three different hospitals
in Surat and also 30 oxygen concentrator machines to Primary and
Comprehensive Healthcare Centres and to villages of South Gujarat as well
as Bikaner district of Rajasthan. 2700 vials of Remdesevir injections were
distributed to patients at cost to cost rate through 'Lokseva Medical Stores'.
Over and above this, looking at the shortage of bed in hospitals, a
facility called 'Vande Mataram' isolation centre was made ready within no
time with 38 beds in collaboration with Seva Foundation as well as other
trust so that struggling Covid-19 patients can get the treatment on
immediate basis.
In addition to this, 2000 grocery kits were distributed to Class-IV
employees and security personnel at New Civil Hospital Surat, as well as to
the Covid-19 patients who were quarantined at home.
Apart from all of above, 'Chhanyado' donated shroud (kafan
cloth) for the poor who lost their battle against Covid-19 as well as chairs
and other items to their kith and kin.
